Description

Kashmiri Apple Ber – also known as Apple Plum Ber or Seb Ber – is a hybrid variety of Indian jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) that’s become quite popular in India, particularly in the north. The name “Kashmiri Apple Ber” comes from the fruit’s apple-like appearance – it’s large, round, shiny, and reddish – though it is not grown in Kashmir nor related to apples in any botanical sense.

🌱 Cultivation Guide for Kashmiri Apple Ber:-

1. Climate & Soil Requirements

  • Climate: Subtropical to arid. Tolerates drought and heat.
  • Temperature: 15°C – 40°C; not frost-tolerant.
  • Soil: Well-drained loamy or sandy soils, pH 6.5–8.
  • Rainfall: 300–500 mm (too much rain harms flowering/fruiting).

2. Planting:-

  • Propagation: Grafted plants preferred for true-to-type fruit.
  • Spacing: 5 x 5 m or 6 x 6 m (≈150–250 trees/acre)
  • Planting Time: June–August (monsoon) or Feb–March in irrigated areas

3. Irrigation:-

  • Drought-tolerant, but irrigation during flowering & fruiting increases yield.
  • Avoid overwatering – root rot is a risk.

4. Pruning:-

  • Done annually (Feb–March) to shape the tree and improve sunlight penetration.
  • Remove dead/diseased branches and excess suckers.

5. Fertilization:-

Age of Tree FYM (kg) Urea (g) SSP (g) MOP (g)
1 year 10–15 200 150 150
2+ years 20–30 500 400 300
  • Apply in two splits: pre-monsoon and post-monsoon.

6. Pest & Disease Management:-

  • Fruit Fly: Trap with pheromone or protein bait.
  • Mealy Bugs: Use neem oil spray or systemic insecticides.
  • Leaf spot & mildew: Use copper oxychloride or sulfur-based fungicides.

7. Harvesting:-

  • Time: 6–8 months after flowering; typically in January–March.
  • Signs of ripeness: Full color (red), firm texture, sweet smell.
  • Yield: Up to 40–60 kg/tree from 3rd year onward under good management.

8. Post-Harvest:-

  • Can be stored for 7–10 days at room temperature.
  • Pack in ventilated crates to prevent damage.
  • Good for transport – shelf life better than traditional ber varieties.

Benefits of Growing Apple Ber:-

  • High market value – better prices than local ber.
  • Drought resistance – suitable for arid/semi-arid areas.
  • Low maintenance – after establishment.
  • Fast return – fruiting starts in 2nd year, good yield from 3rd year.
  • Attractive fruit – easy to sell in urban and export markets.
